While in Maui we took a trip over to the only of the of the Hawaian islands not explored by Captain Cook. With a population of only 3000 people most of the island still resembles the open fields that were used to grow pineapples for Dole before most of the island was sold to a private individual. Today, the island sports two world class resorts that are both run by the Four Seasons. You'd think that two resorts separated by just nine miles would pretty similar, but nothing could be further from the truth. The beach hotel is called Manele and overlooks Hulopo'e beach where the Palawai islanders have lived for over 500 years. It is a classic beach resort with a feel that reminds you more of the Carribean than Hawaii.

Just up the road is the Kalaweha Lodge – home to world class golf and a unique tropical alpine forest. While the rest of the island is dry and hot, this place is frequently cool and rainy. Quite the contrast!
