You have to wonder if this could ever be done in the U.S. In an area where people protest anything – especially if it involves some public funds. The British wanted to build something to celebrate the new millineum. When it rolled around they had the London Eye – the largest observation wheel in the world. Part of what makes the Eye interesting is that it uses a wire-tension setup: there are no solid beams to hold the Eye up. The weight just pulls against itself to create a balance. If the engineering and architecture impress you on the ground, you should see the views it provides. The Eye has dramatically changed the London skyline and it provides stunning views of one of the greatest cities in the world. Each 'flight' lasts about a half-hour and it is very smooth. British Airways stepped up as a sponsor and they obviously brought their expertise to running the show since the line moved fast and you could even book in advance. Next time we want to try a night 'flight'.
