Metz is one of those cities that reminds you of old Europe.  That isn't a surprise since it was a former Roman center of power: the Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains is here. Built in the 4th century it is one of the oldest churches in the world and the oldest in France.  Later it was the center of the Carolignian dynasty and, later, a 'free' city within the German empire.  All in all it was a pretty little place - especially with the decorations being rolled out for Christmas!
