NASA and Cobras at Charlotte Motor Speedway
We rolled into Lowes Motor Speedway at mid-afternoon under sweltering July heat. Just coming into the place is pretty fun: it's huge and we could hear the stock cars running on the track as a part of the Richard Petty Experience.
NASA tried to help us out with a little extra practice time, but a problem with the corner workers prevented us from actually taking the track. The next practice was only 3 laps since an American Iron mustang rolled his car and we had to wait for the emergency workers. (For this guy, it was his second time rolling the car in just two races. You can see his car #11 on the next page just before he rolled it.)
So when qualifying came everyone was still
trying to learn the track. Gary Krichbaum
obviously learned quickly and qualified second overall to start from the outside
pole. I learned the track a bit and found out that I would start a ways back in the
13th spot. Not terrible, but it was still a long way away from Gary.
