Bobbie's car was painted late the night before we took it to a soggy Summit Point.  With Marschall Cooper acting as crew chief, we set a goal of finishing in the Top 20 for Dan to get a little practice before finally getting back out on the track with Cobra.

The morning practice was low key as we focused on working the line with the car. The plan was for us to use the qualifying session to pick up our time and try to qualify in the top 20.  When it came time to qualify, it was raining hard and made the session a joke.  We started 25th, but Marschall worked the radio to quickly help move the pink RX-7 up through the field when the actual race started.

The key was to make sure that Bobbie's car came back in one piece.  The first few laps were pretty cautious as the field strung out a little.  Then it was time to pick up the pace and we ran down some more cars.  We've known all along that the car won't run in the top 10, but we're learning the car a bit and it seems clear that we will eventually get it into the Top 15.  For this race, we would have probably finished 18th, but Dan got confused over a new lighting system:  a red light came on and Dan thought it meant that there was an emergency on the track and began pulling over to stop.  Unfortunately, it just meant there was debris on the track.  The error meant two cars got by.  Dan just missed 19th by about 3 feet and would have need another lap to get the other car.

As usual, the RX-7 crowd was wonderfully supportive.  Lots of friendly banter and earnest technical assistance.  Amazingly, there was almost no car contact in this race despite the light rain.  So mission accomplished:  a top 20 finish and Bobbie's car back in one piece.

Here's a fun little video from the start.
