What a strange start to the 2007 season for Team Elam.  This time we took 4 cars to NASA's event at VIR.  We would run Bobbie's new Porsche, Harry and Dan with upgrades to a new class, the Daytona Coupe in the Charlie Gibson 300.  Dan's white Cobra and Bobbie's pink Porsche didn't get past practice before we got caught with engine problems.  That left Harry driving the red Cobra and Dan switching to the Coupe for the sprint races.

Dan qualified the CDOC-sponsored coupe in 5th place overall and second in the Super Unlimited class.  When the flag dropped Dan made an immediate move up to take over third.  He was racing against the stock car you see in the video.  Dan had opened up a sizable lead before a yellow flag on the last lap came out and allowed the stock car to catch up.  Then it was a drag race down the back straight that Dan managed to win thanks to really good exit off a turn a late brake into the top of "roller coaster".  Dan got the run off the final turn and appeared to have the class win locked up when lapped traffic got in the way and Dan had to check up at the finish.  The stock car got by on the outside and ended up winning by three feet.

On Sunday it was raining and Dan stayed on the sidelines for the sprint race while Harry got some track time.  Harry mostly stayed out of trouble and came up with a strong 4th in class finish and was the second highest finishing Cobra.

The coupe is purpose-built as an endurance race car and despite having the outside pole for the race, we were crushed when the rain came down even harder.  We decided to mix the teams and have Dan and Mike Morris drive the coupe while Harry and Bud Verstynen would drive the red Cobra.  Mike missed the first turn of the race and went from first to 31st in one turn, but steadily marched the car back to the front before turning the car over to Dan in second place.  One big reason why we were doing so well was because we had a volunteer pit-crew made up of students from J. Sergeant Reynold's School of Automotive Engineering.  The kids were terrific and made the pit stops without a hitch.

Dan set off on a modest pace while still putting pressure for the overall win.  With a nearly two lap lead in class, all we needed to do was stay out of trouble.  Unfortunately, that didn't happen as Dan later put the car into the wall when he locked the front wheels on a slow turn.  They towed the car back to the pits where the team decided that the car could return to track.  In short order we were back out but a number of laps down.  At that point all we really cared about was finishing an enduro race with the coupe.  It was really nice when we brought the car back down pit lane and all of the crews and competitors were on the wall cheering.

In the end it was Harry and Bud finishing first in class and 21st overall.  They did it by staying out of trouble although Bud did get hit a Miata late in the race.  Just one lap behind - second in class and 22nd overall was Dan and Mike.  A few more laps and the finishing order might have been reversed.

So the carnage for the cars was disappointing.  These are going to turn out to be some expensive podium finishes.  But at least we got them and all of the drivers ended up making some progress and the cars showed potential.  Bobbie's car was especially strong in practice and it was very disappointing that she didn't get to race.  It is a long season.  We'll see where we go from here.
